Hunger can affect anyone. Many Americans are just one job loss or medical crisis away from food insecurity. 1 in 8 in the U.S. face hunger today. That’s more than 42 million people, 13 million being kids and 5 million being seniors.
Studies have found that kids who face food insecurity are at higher risk for chronic health conditions and behavioral issues that may hinder their ability to function normally and participate fully in school and other activities.
Oftentimes, people must resort to using coping strategies like watering down food or drinks, purchasing inexpensive, unhealthy food, receiving help from friends or selling their personal property in order to meet their food needs.
Seniors face medical and mobility challenges that put them at a greater risk of hunger. Access to proper nutrition is paramount for maintaining a better quality of life. Food-secure seniors are healthier, better able to fight illnesses and live independently longer.
