Did you know, twenty-one million children across the US receive free or reduced-cost lunches during the school year? During the summer months, only 3.9 million of those kids continue to have access to those meals. That’s why we’re asking you to Step Up to the Plate with us and provide support to struggling families. Let’s make sure every kid is able to enjoy their summer and not worry about their next meal.

More than 13 million children in the US live in “food insecure” homes. That means those families don’t regularly have enough food to eat, the most basic of all human needs.

Research shows that family grocery costs rise more than $300 a month when school is out and school meals disappear, putting a strain on already-tight budgets.

Kids who struggle with hunger during the summer are more likely to experience “summer slide”, forgetting what they learned and starting the school year behind their peers.

When they’re hungry, kids are more likely to be hospitalized and they face higher risks of health conditions like anemia and asthma. They are also more likely to have problems in school and other social situations.
